4 Creative Ways to Make a Music Room Special

Whether you use your music room for practicing music or writing your magnum opus, the key goal with your interior design concepts for the room should be to create space and calm.

After all, if the space is cluttered and disorganized, your mind will reflect that. A room full of frustrations and distractions does not create a calm and creative space for you to improve as a musician.

To help you with this, we’ve come up with these four tips for decluttering your space, and making it somewhere that is truly a music room, and not a “frustration room”.

Hang Your Instruments To Inspire

What is one of the first things that makes a music room a music room? Simple – it has musical instruments in it!

One of the things guitar teachers try to tell parents is that the best way to engage their kids with the instrument is to make sure it’s always available. The guitar that’s in a case in the closet never gets played, but the guitar that’s always in view is always top of mind.

One of the great things about the guitar is not only is it a great, instrument, it looks super cool as well. Whether you have one guitar or many, consider hanging the guitars on the wall using purpose built guitar wall mounts so that the instrument is always in view and always read to go.

Display Your Taste

These days most younger people have no time for physical media, preferring the ease of streaming services for listening to music.

However, if you’re one of those people who still has a music collection, be it CDs or records, consider making a place for it in your music room. You can also get individual record shelves if you want to hang your old record covers as pieces of art – and if you don’t have any, you can always pick a few up on eBay or Amazon for surprisingly cheap.

Don’t have any music? Consider picking up a poster for your first concert online and hanging it up to remind you of where it all began.

Transform your old instruments into decor

If you’re a long term musician – highly likely if you’re the kind of person with a music room – you doubtless have a small collection of instrument well past their prime.

Consider making these instruments into functional parts of the room. Whether it’s a snare drum used as a potted plant, a vase made out of a trumpet, or a shelf made from an old keyboard, you can easily find ways to make your music room packed with both old and new instruments.

Make Space For Creativity

One of the greatest things for musicians of the last few years is the fact that we’re always carrying a portable recording device – our phones!

When I started writing music I had to carry a small Dictaphone with me at all times so that if inspiration struck when I was away from my guitar, I had some way to record my thoughts to play back later and take that snippet from a concept to a full song.

In the same way, you should make sure your creative space is ready for you to record all of your inspiring moments. Whether that means setting up a whiteboard to flesh out song arrangements, some notebooks to record lyric ideas, or even a small computer and an interface to record your ideas as they come to you, make sure that when inspiration strikes, it doesn’t get forgotten!

Design your music room with care

In an ideal world we’d have all day to be creative, but in the modern world that is rarely the case. When you have some time to go to your music room and realize that creative part of you, make sure the space is set up to allow you to work on your music, free of distractions, and feeling inspired by the setting.

If you’re going to the trouble of designating a corner of your house for being creative, the time spent making the space as creative as possible will pay off in spades. Enjoy!
