How your window replacement project turns out will mostly depend on whom you hire. This is why it’s important to be careful about your choice of contractor. There are a lot of replacement window contractors out there, but not all of them will be able to address your needs and help you achieve your goals for the project. This means the selection process will require some work, but it will be well worth the effort.

To help you get started, I’ve listed a few basic dos and don’ts for you to remember:

  • DO get multiple quotes. Shopping around will allow you to compare different contractors’ rates for their services and help you figure out who can offer the most value for your money. A good rule of thumb is to talk to three to five local contractors. Make sure you outline the exact same terms with each contractor you interview so you can compare their quotes fairly.

  • DO negotiate. Contractors are usually open to negotiation, so don’t be afraid to ask if they’re willing to agree on a lower price point. That said, you should still be mindful of haggling etiquette. The last thing you want is to disrespect someone you’re hoping to hire. Contractors understand that most homeowners have to stick to a budget, so just be honest during negotiations. They may be able to offer an affordable financing option to make payments easier on your pocket.
  • DO check their credentials. This is consumer protection rule number one: do not take a contractor’s word on everything, no matter how good their local reputation is. Things you’ll want to verify include the contractor’s license, insurance, bond, certifications, trade association memberships, address, contact information, and project portfolio.

  • DON’T forget to check reviews from past clients. If you want an honest opinion on a replacement window contractor, ask family members and friends who’ve worked with them in the past. It’s a good idea to start checking with the people closest to you, but if none of your contacts have had experience with your candidate contractor, you can always read reviews on Angie’s List and the Better Business Bureau.
  • DON’T hesitate to ask questions. Your home and money are both at stake, so you’re well within your rights to raise concerns or ask the contractor for clarifications. How they answer your questions should also help you gauge their level of expertise and the kind of customer service they offer. If you feel that a contractor is intentionally dodging your questions, don’t be afraid to walk away.

  • DON’T sign anything unless you’re 100% ready to do so. No decent contractor will force you to sign paperwork on your first meeting. An honest window replacement contractor will be upfront about all the terms of your project and make sure you fully understand what you’re signing up for before asking for your commitment. House visits are not binding either. If you feel that a contractor is pressuring you into a hasty decision, take your business elsewhere.

Having your windows replaced is a big investment, so it’s natural for you to want to get the most out of it. If you entrust your project to the right people, you can’t go wrong.
