Last Updated on August 12, 2022 by Kravelv

At some point, you may notice that your bathroom sink is draining slowly. It may not help you to get the water down as quickly as you would like, causing you a good deal of grief in the process. Your regular tasks are going to take twice as long to get done because you have to wait for the water to move and it can often get worse if you do not take the time to get it fixed. There are a number of things that can cause the sink to drain slowly and some of these include:

Minor Clogs

Most of the time, the reason that your sink is draining so slowly is that there is a clog in the pipe. This problem is going to have a number of at-home solutions, but you will need to get a plumber to take a look at it and see whether there is a clog in the pipes or not. They will then be able to remove the blockage out of the sink with a snake or an auger. Once that is done, they will clean out the pipe with a blast of water through force.

This can help make the drain safer for you to use in any manner that you would like. There are a lot of things that can cause a clog in the sink of your home, but soap scum, dirt, food, and hair are the most common causes.

Tree Roots

If there happens to be a tree root that starts to grow into your sewer line, then there are a number of problems that will start to show up throughout the entire system. This could also result in a sink that is draining out slowly. This is a major problem that is not as common as some of the others, but if it is the main issue with your sink, then you will need to call in the professionals to take care of it for you.

A plumber will need to come to your home to remove the root of the tree and then replace the section of pipe that was damaged. This can take a lot of time and will cost more than the other repairs on the list. There isn’t a lot that you can do to prevent the issue, so you may be stuck with getting it fixed if it does happen.

P-Trap Problems

The P-trap is going to be the part of the pipe that is found right under the sink. Clogs can often get stuck in the bend of the P-trap because of the way it is designed, which is going to make the blockage more difficult to remove and it is often harder for it to be seen from the drain of the sink as well.

One of the main reasons that there will be a clog with the P-trap is that the homeowner pours grease down the kitchen drain. The grease will start to settle into the bend and that allows other materials to start sticking to the pipe. In most cases, a plumber will need to come over to the home and help you clean out the P-trap.

Septic Tank Sludge

It is possible that problems with your septic tank will also be a contributing factor to how fast the sinks are going to drain out the water. If sludge starts to collect in the tank, it is going to block up the main line. This is enough to cause the drains in your home to slow down quite a bit, especially if you don’t recognize the problem right away.

This is another problem that the plumber will need to fix for you. They are the ones who will be able to properly diagnose the issue that is going on with the septic tank. In the best case, it is possible that the plumber will be able to give the tank a quick bath with some water and bleach, though there is the potential that a lot more work needs to be done to get it back up and running again.

Deterioration

Either through chemicals or through age, the pipes and other elements of your plumbing are going to go through corrosion and deterioration. If you tend to use a lot of chemical cleaners to help clear out the drains, the corrosion is more likely to happen faster than some of the other plumbing systems. Rust build-up could also be a big factor. When this happens and is the culprit to your slow draining pipes, then it is likely that you will need to replace the damaged pipes with some new ones.

Old plumbing can also be an issues. Old plumbing is going to have a much harder time with all of the functions that you need to rely on it for. This can also include that the water is draining out slower than before. The fixture, drain, or pipe will slow down the flow of water, so you need to make sure that you are keeping the whole plumbing system up to date as much as possible.

Regular maintenance is one of the best things that you can do for your plumbing system. It will help to prolong the life of the system so that it will not wear out and you will not need to replace the whole thing. Yearly appointments to have a professional take a look at the system is one of the bet ways to get this done.
