What Situations Can You Get Insurance For?

Last Updated on August 17, 2022 by Kravelv

When you move into a new home, one of the first things you will want to do is take out home insurance.

Typically, home insurance protects your home and its contents against incidents and events, such as flooding, fire damage, and even burglary. However, as it is always wise to do so when you are taking out an insurance policy, you will need to make sure that you check that it covers exactly what you want it to, just so there are no nasty surprises further down the road.

So, what can home insurance typically protect against?

Fire Damage

Fire damage is one of the most common things people take out home insurance to protect against. In 2022, this has become more important, especially with the wildfires breaking out across the US and even parts of Europe.

Fire damage insures your property against damage caused by an electrical fire, or one started nearby, (such as a wildfire) and in some cases, it also protects against fires caused by lightning strikes. Water Damage

Water damage is an interesting area when it comes to taking out home insurance. It sounds straightforward, but it isn’t. Water or flood damage is usually defined in insurance documents as occurring due to rainfall, overflowing river, or, depending on where you live, mudslides. This can cover all areas of your home, from a leaking room to an internal flood.

Storm Damage

What is a storm? Most people would define it as a thunderstorm, a rainstorm, or even a windstorm. However, when it comes to home insurance, they all have their definitions, which can vary greatly based on where you live. So, when taking out home insurance, if you live in an area that is frequently hit by hurricanes and tornados, make sure that the home insurance covers it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about definitions.

Burglary or Vandalism

Most home insurance covers contents insurance. So, if you go away on vacation and come home to find that your home has been burgled, vandalized, or has been burned in a deliberate fire, this will likely be covered under home insurance.

There will usually be an extensive investigation following a claim for burglary, which will involve the police and other legal teams.

Subsidence

Most people love the leaning tower of Pisa, but if this was happening in your home, it would not be as much of a tourist attraction. It would also be very hard to walk around and live in.

Subsidence of a property usually occurs when the foundation becomes damaged, and the house begins to sink or tilt to one side. In some cases, it can be due to the ground under your home becoming damp, a hole forming in an unseen cavern or, it can even be due to an earthquake.

Luckily, foundation repair and subsidence are covered by most home insurance policies, so check the fine print.
