Basic Grouting Know How

Though the job of grouting may appear simple, you still need to equip yourself with the proper know how regarding the execution of the job. So, how should grouting go?

Aside from the main star of the job – the grout, you will also need to have the right tools for grouting. Getting the right tools when grouting will get the job done safely and efficiently. What will you be needing?

The rubber float spreader is a rectangular tool, which is often hand held. It is utilized to press as well as spread the grout into the gaps or joints. Alternatively, you may also use a spatula for small grouting jobs.

The mixing bucket will aid you in mixing the grout. You can also use the same bucket in carrying the mixed grout around as well as store it while you are working. Remember, grouting may take some time to do so, you will need a reliable storage container for the grout.

The grout sponge will be used when you need to clean any residual grout from the tile surfaces before it starts to set or cure.

Obviously, this will be for storing water. You need water since you will be using it to rinse the grout sponge.

You will also need a grout sealer or a sealing agent. The grout sealer will ensure that your grout is well protected. Depending on the type of grout sealer you have, it can be applied to wet grout or you may need to wait for the grout to cure before sealing it.

Mixing the Grout

Mixing the grout is not just like throwing in water on a pile of sand. When mixing the grout and water, it is important to set aside a certain amount of unmixed grout so that if your grout mixture turns out quite runny, you still have some, which you can add to get the right consistency. If your mixture has too much water in it, the grout quality will turn out bad. The right consistency for your grout paste should be similar to that of a cold mayonnaise. It should be thick enough to hold its shape, yet still workable.

Preparing the Gaps

After you have your tools prepared and your grout almost ready for application, you also have to still take care of preparing the gaps. This must not be ignored, as this will also be a factor that will contribute to the overall appearance of the finished job as well as the durability of the grout. When preparing your grout, you have to ensure that the tiles are all cleaned well. Make sure that the tile gaps are slightly damp, as bone-dry gaps may quickly absorb the grout’s water. This will eventually cause premature curing. With cement-based materials in construction, the speed of curing affects the durability and strength of the material.
