Selling your home can be a stressful time. There is a lot to do before it goes on the market and this can feel quite daunting. If you’re unsure of where to start, follow our simple steps. Your home will be ready for buyers in no time.

1. Carry Out Repairs

Go through your home room by room and fix any breakages. This includes:

  • Replacing light bulbs
  • Fixing dripping faucets
  • Repairing doors and drawers that don’t close or fit properly
  • Fixing cracks and chips in paintwork
  • Resolving any electrical issues. Call in professional electricians if necessary.

You may feel that these are insignificant problems. However, they are off-putting for potential buyers.

2. Depersonalize

When a buyer walks around your home, they want to imagine their life there. If you have lots of personal possessions lying around, then this will make it difficult for them. Remove as much personal clutter as possible. Go for a minimal and neutral style. This will make it easier for them to imagine their furniture and possessions in your home.

3. Declutter

Go through the whole house and declutter. Get rid of any rubbish or items that are not in use. Decide whether to throw them away or give them away. Items you are keeping should be put away neatly. If there are items that you don’t want to part with, ask a friend to store them during the buying process. Alternatively, rent some temporary storage space. Remove any unnecessary items to give the impression of space.

4. Look at Your Decor

Is your decor looking a little tired? Could your paintwork do with a touch-up? If so, get out the paint and paint brushes and give the place a spruce up. Opt for neutral tones and remove any busy wallpaper or colors. Read our guide for frugal ways to renovate your house.

5. Deep Clean

Deep clean your home from top to bottom. Work from room to room and from the top downwards. Make sure every surface sparkles and floors are clean and clear. Remove any cobwebs and dust corners and skirting boards. Clean windows inside and out and pay attention to sills. Clean and polish faucets and clean all tiles and grout. Attend to any lingering pet or food odors.

6. Don’t Forget the Exterior

Potential buyers may walk or drive past your home before they make an appointment. Therefore, you need to make sure that the exterior is as presentable and inviting as possible.

Walk around the whole area and address any issues. Mend broken fencing and remove any garden rubbish. Does the outside of your house need a lick of paint? Does your fence need varnishing? Does your garden furniture need mending or replacing? Address any problems that may be off-putting for potential buyers.

Next, pay attention to the garden. Mow all lawns and neaten borders. Trim overgrown plants and bushes. Weed all areas and then remove all green waste. If your garden is looking a little dull, introduce colorful border plants. Pots and containers also work well.

Walk past your house from the sidewalk and check it from each angle. There may be areas you have overlooked.
